You might be surprised to hear this, but when cats produce babies and become mothers, they get very protective about their kittens, just like us humans, and could die if their newly born babies are taken away from them.
Mother cats have a very special relationship with their baby kittens.
When kittens are born, they are born blind and deaf. This is the period when they desperately seek for their mother and are only comfortable when they find her around. They know by the smell when their mother is around them. It takes around 10-12 days for the baby kittens to open their eyes and ears.
Newly born kittens don't need food. All they need is their mother's milk.
The mother cat protects her babies and stays with them all the time, licks them with her tongue to keep them clean, and holds them in her mouth to take them wherever she goes.
